Das an der Erdoberfläche gemessene Magnetfeld hat verschiedene Quellen. Der Hauptanteil, das Hauptfeld mit 90 %, wird von dem sogenannten Geodynamo-Prozess erzeugt. Magnetisierte Gesteine in der Erdkruste erzeugen das Krustenfeld, welches in Form von lokalen bis regionalen Anomalien dem Hauptfeld überlagert ist. Diese Anomalien werden für Hessen in der Karte \"Anomalien des erdmagnetischen Totalfeldes von Hessen 1 : 300.000\" dargestellt.<\/SPAN>Grundlage der hessischen Magnetfeldanomalien ist die vom Leibniz-Institut für Angewandte Geophysik (LIAG, Hannover) gemeinsam mit der Firma Geophysik GGD (Leipzig) hergestellte Karte der magnetischen Totalfeldanomalien für das gesamte Gebiet der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Für Hessen wurden die von der Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) zur Verfügung gestellte Befliegung Westdeutschlands in 1000 m über NN und durch das LIAG veranlasste Messungen
